A small naming rule that keeps links consistent
Choose names before distributing links. For example, use newsletter as the source, email as the medium and autumn-launch as the campaign. Keep those labels consistent across the destinations belonging to that campaign.
- Source identifies where the link will appear.
- Medium groups the kind of channel.
- Campaign groups the initiative.
- Content can distinguish placements such as main-link or footer-link.
- Term is optional; leave it blank when it has no purpose.
Google's campaign URL guidance explains how compatible analytics can interpret these parameters. Google also offers a free URL builder. This independent tool adds a simple local workflow; it is not affiliated with Google.
Use these for external campaign links, not ordinary navigation within your site. Never place private information in labels. Test the destination after adding parameters. A generated link does not demonstrate traffic, conversion or profit.
